Leading indicators of manufacturing activity now point to a significant decline in global manufacturing activity in coming months. One signal is in the chart below where the leading indicator used is the proportion of countries with a falling Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development (OECD) diffusion index. As I discuss below, the global recession narrative is now becoming broad-based. The implication is that risk assets would struggle to maintain their historically elevated valuations despite the recent de-rating. And duration is likely to find increasing favour despite high inflation and the market mood music implicit in the current manic bond sell-off.
